In the northwestern reaches of the Araen Sea there is a stretch of ocean constantly shrouded in mist. No storm or wind disturbs this eerie cloud for long, and there is a sense of palpable gloom that pervades the area. To all senses, including every known detection magic, there is nothing unnatural about the fog, even as every instinct says exactly the opposite.
Deep beneath the mist-covered surface lies a cold-water reef. Upon this reef, the Altriaesti have crafted a small outpost through magical and mundane means. The outpost is dubbed Vigilance Reef, and those sea-elves stationed here guard against an ancient and unknown evil. Not far from the reef is a system of underwater caves. Deep within these caverns, according to the Altriaesti’s oldest legends and scriptures, rests an evil that, if awakened and freed, would spell destruction for all. Altriaesti law forbids any from entering these caves, for those who get too close to what is trapped there end up under its sway more often than not.
This law hampers the guardians at Vigilance Reef somewhat, as other undersea races such as the Grindylow and Sahuagin periodically settle in these caverns. Prevented from entering the caverns themselves, the Altriaesti soldiers find themselves dealing with a much greater threat than might otherwise be the case. The sea-elves have prevailed thus far, but many fear it is only a matter of time before they fail and the evil they guard against is unleashed.
